Dilaudid 4mg is used to help relieve moderate to severe pain. Dilaudid 4mg belongs to a class of drugs known as opioid analgesics. It works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain.

How to use Dilaudid 4mg

Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start taking Dilaudid 4mg and each time you get a refill.  Ask your doctor or pharmacist, If you have any questions.

Take this medication through the  mouth as directed by your doctor. You can take this drug with or without food. If you have nausea, it can help to take this drug with food.

When using the liquid form of Dilaudid 4mg, carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you might not get the correct dose. Do not confuse the dose of Dilaudid 4mg in milligrams (mg) with the dosage in milliliters (mL). Ask your pharmacist or doctor if you are not sure how to check or measure the dosage. If your liquid is a suspension, shake the bottle very well before each dose.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and your response to treatment. Do not increase your dose, take the medication more frequently, or take it for a longer time than directed. Properly stop the medication when so instructed by your doctor.

Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, sweating, flushing, or dry mouth may occur. Some of these side effects can decrease after you have been using Dilaudid 4mg for a while. If any of these effects last or get worse, inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

To prevent constipation, eat dietary fiber, drink enough water, and exercise always. You might also need to take a laxative. Ask your pharmacist which type of laxative is good for you.

To decrease the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, always get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.

Remember that Dilaudid 4mg has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Most people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
